You might know about Joseph Erlanger, Nobel Prize Winner

I also want you to know about Joseph Erlanger, immigrant family to breakthrough scientist,  grandfather, and APS leader.

I'm Dorothy Erlanger, inspirational speaker, Ironman triathlete, and granddaughter of Joseph Erlanger.

It has been a great honor for my family to have stewardship of his Nobel medal and diploma since his passing, and it's our honor to pass it along now to APS. There's no better home for it than with APS, an organization of tremendous importance to my grandfather.

He and his colleagues formed what I call the ultimate mastermind, meeting regularly at APS and corresponding between meetings, with multiple Nobels across the group.  And, for over 10 years, he served in APS leadership, as Treasurer and President.

You probably know about the science Joseph Erlanger advanced - I'd like to share the man with you.

He was the son of German Jewish immigrants, was the first person in his family to go to college, and was in the third graduating class of Johns Hopkins Medical School.

At the Summit in April I'll be sharing more about the person I knew as Grandpa and you know as a researcher, Nobel winner, and pioneer in the understanding of how nerves carry information though the body. For today, I'll share this - one of the best pieces of leadership advice I've ever gotten came from him -  you can be a leader in a very quiet way, with a very big impact.

There's already been a lot of buzz about the Nobel and the Erlanger legacy at the core of APS, and because of that interest, I'm looking forward to speaking at universities and APS chapters across America this year.

I'd love to see you at the Baltimore meeting, and hope you'll come to the Saturday session to learn about the man behind the Nobel. And I'd love for you to consider being one of the stops along the road for me this year, sharing my grandfather with your people.
